BLUE COTTON DRESS
© Michelle Krell Malone (ASCAP)

At a trendy party, on the west side of town
Every fashion statement, every glittery gown
Flashing lights and the music is loud
A stranger appears in the midst of the crowd
In a simple cotton dress, a girl with a pretty face
But she's so plain, she looks out of place

She doesn't seem to notice that we stare
No, she looks so self-assured, as if she doesn't care
I wonder if she's from some mountain home somewhere
She seems to know just who she is
Leaving us to guess
Tonight she dances in a simple blue cotton dress

See the way she dances, how she seems to be free
She never tries to be part of the scene
Did she wear it as a way to redeem
Something she lost just to follow a dream?
And does she miss her friends, the warm fireplace
Or a simple life, an easier pace?

She doesn't seem to notice that we stare
No, she looks so self-assured, as if she doesn't care
Wonder if she's from some mountain home somewhere
She seems to know just who she is
Leaving us to guess
Tonight she dances in a simple blue cotton dress

Watching her so self-assured
Standing in the light
Did she trade a simple life for something new?
I know, 'cause I traded mine too

She doesn't seem to notice that we stare
No, she looks so self-assured, as if she doesn't care
Wonder if she's from some mountain home somewhere
She seems to know just who she is
Leaving us to guess
Tonight she dances in a simple blue cotton dress
Tonight she dances in a simple blue cotton dress
